Vienna/Berlin. Production of the famous cigarette brand Marlboro will probably be stopped in the medium term.

According to the news published by many daily newspapers in Austria, referring to an article in the “Welt” newspaper, the US tobacco company Philip Morris plans to withdraw from the classic cigarette business with glow sticks. Austro-German boss Markus Essing said at an event in Berlin: „We will exit the cigarette business and only offer products with reduced risk“ said. The senior executive did not reveal when the Marlboro package will be released from Traffic shops. Essing, „We can set an end date, but we haven’t set a date yet“ said. But accordingly, phasing out can occur in ten to 15 years.

Philipp Morris sets itself apart from other large tobacco companies in its international approach. Since 2017, the company has not advertised the Marlboro cigarette brand, once the flagship of the group and one of the ten most valuable brands in the world.

The company will remain in the market with other nicotine products

The company is focusing on other products that can be used to deplete the addictive nicotine. The first and foremost of these is the tobacco heater called Iqos. Tobacco is not burned inside the appliance, which means less harmful substances are produced. However, its use can still be harmful to health and addictive.

Philipp Morris also does business with sachets containing nicotine salt. According to Krone’s news, the company is thus taking advantage of the trend of more and more Austrians turning to cigarette alternatives. The Ministry of Social Affairs evaluated such developments as a “challenge” in its 2022 report on tobacco and nicotine consumption.

With this initiative, Philip Morris also reacts to the fact that more restrictions on smoking may soon be introduced in the European Union. The next phase of the common tobacco directive is currently being worked on in the EU. More advertising restrictions and warnings on social media for cigarettes are discussed, as well as uniform packaging with only the brand name on the package.

Sales have already stalled in Great Britain

The company caused a stir by announcing in 2021 that it would stop selling cigarettes in the UK within ten years. The tobacco giant was reacting to the British government’s plan to make the country smoke-free by 2030. (yenivatan.at)
