News: Businessman Bids 10,000 BGN for Exotic Melon to Fund Plovdiv Sculpture
Plevensko, Bulgaria – August 9, 2024 - A 49-year-old agribusinessman, Georgi Tarov, has made a surprising bid of 10,000 BGN for a Japanese melon at an online auction. The auction was held to raise funds for the creation of a public sculpture in Plovdiv.
Tarov, who owns 300 acres of vegetable gardens in Plevensko, explained that he was motivated by a desire to support the project and contribute to the city’s cultural landscape. “The goal is to have a fountain of fertility in Plovdiv,” he said.
The auction attracted significant interest, with nine participants bidding on the unique fruit. The final price of 10,000 BGN was significantly higher than the initial starting price of 400 BGN.
The proceeds from the auction will be used to commission a sculpture titled “Fountain with the Apple” by sculptor Tsviatko Syromashki. The sculpture is intended to be a prominent feature in the center of Plovdiv.
Tarov, a native of the village of Woolchitrun, has a long-standing connection to the land and is actively involved in agricultural endeavors. He expressed concerns about the state of agriculture in Bulgaria, calling for increased support for smaller agricultural sectors.
The mayor of Valchitran, Milena Tarova, praised Tarov for his ongoing support to the village and its residents.
