Jamaica, a perennial favorite for gold, failed to qualify for the men’s 4x100m relay final at the Paris Games.
The two-time Olympic champions finished fourth in their heat with a time of 38.45 seconds, which was not enough to secure either a place in the final based on the traditional qualifying criteria or through time rankings. Notably, Japan and the Italian team, the “lucky losers” from the Tokyo Olympics, advanced to the final.
The American relay team recorded the best time in the series with 37.47 seconds. The Republic of South Africa finished second in the first heat with a time of 38 seconds.
In the second heat, China clocked the fastest time of 38.24 seconds, but this was not enough to impress, as seven other teams in the heat ran faster.
In the women’s event, the American relay team dominated, cruising to victory in the first heat with a time of 41.94 seconds thanks to star Sha’Kari Richardson. Germany and Switzerland advanced from the first heat to the final.
From the second heat, Great Britain, France, Jamaica, Canada, and the Netherlands qualified for the final, with the British women posting the best time of 42.03 seconds.
The finals will take place on Friday.
