Baghdad / Obelisk Al-Hadath: The Federal Supreme Court dismissed a lawsuit regarding the illegality of reactivating the Independent Commission for Elections and Referendums in the Kurdistan Region.

The lawsuit was filed by the head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan bloc, Representative Ziyad Jabbar, who asked the Federal Court to consider the legality of reactivating the Kurdistan Regional Election Commission.

The court dismissed the case, stating that the case is not within the powers of the judge.

This comes after the Federal Supreme Court held, last May 30, a special session in which it considered several cases, including the case for extending the life of the fifth session of the Kurdistan Region Parliament, where the court issued its decision that the extension of the life of Parliament is unconstitutional.

This coincides with the approaching date set for holding the elections for the Parliament of the Kurdistan Region on November 18, 2023, but differences between the political parties and parties in the region impede the progress of the process.

The Presidency of the Kurdistan Region called on the Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq to show its readiness to supervise the elections to be held in Kurdistan, and for the process to take place either on its scheduled date next November or with the Iraqi provincial elections on December 18, 2023.
