In a press conference with the Guayaquil media, the president of the FEF (Francisco Egas) spoke about the preparation for the Copa América and gave his point of view on controversial issues that have arisen in recent weeks.
Regarding the Copa América and the objectives that have been set for this tournament, Egas said: “We are going with the desire to achieve something more than just competing… If we go with the conviction of going far in the Copa America, we have more possibilities than if we come to this tournament to learn or something like that.”
When asked about the controversial statements made by Miguel Ángel Loor (president of LigaPro), who accused him of being destabilising, Egas replied: “I will meet with the leaders as many times as they ask me to. The meeting arose from the concerns that the clubs have and if my presence can contribute, I will do it a thousand times.”
“Talking about destabilizing because we ask for information is completely out of place. The FEF is the owner of Ecuadorian football and the Ecuadorian football championship, which is in some way outsourced to the Liga Pro, but we will always be concerned about the good health of the clubs and there are clubs that are tremendously in debt.”
Regarding the economic situation of the clubs and the possibility that the national tournament will be managed by the FEF again, Egas responded: “It’s a much more complicated situation (the clubs’ economic situation) than when LigaPro started five years ago. There is no hidden side or mysterious side, much less a bad side.”
“The FEF is not interested in managing the tournament, nor the audiovisual rights of the tournament.”
Finally, he denied that players Robert Arboleda and Gonzalo Plata have received any sanctions from the FEF: “We have not made any decision regarding any of the selected players, that is a rumour in the press. It is an issue that we will have to look at as we go along. It is regrettable that this has tarnished the good work that the team did on the FIFA date.”
