Born in Iran, she has mostly dealt with the situation of women in the Muslim world. Her debut film “Women without Men” was awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2009. Her works always reflect Neshat’s identity as an artist and a person at the same time. The 63-year-old never stays on the surface, but thoroughly penetrates her subjects and questions with her – and through her – art.
