In Romania, fighter jets were alerted due to an unidentified air target detected over the Black Sea, 45 kilometers from the Romanian state border, the Romanian Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense in Bucharest (MAPN), the radars detected the target approaching the mainland at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, 45 kilometers from the settlement of Szentgyörgy (Sfantu Gheorghe) in Tulcea County. As the target was approaching the Romanian state border, the competent bodies of NATO and the Romanian Air Force were alerted. Following the alert, two F-18s of the Spanish Air Force performing air defense patrols in Romania and two F-16s of the Romanian Air Force took off from the Mihail Kogalniceanu and Borcea air bases, respectively.
According to the radar signal, the unknown target reached the Romanian land border near the settlement of Gura Portitei around 4:00 a.m. Therefore, the population living in the north-eastern part of Constanța county was also warned that there is a risk of an unknown object impact. The unknown target penetrated 19 kilometers deep into the Romanian airspace, then disappeared from the radar screens around 4:30 a.m.
According to MAPN, none of the four fighters managed to make “visual contact” with the object detected by the radars. The air raid warning was sounded at 5:10 a.m. and the fighters were ordered back. According to the Ministry of Defense, based on the data so far, “the existence of an impact zone” is unlikely, but the authorities started to search the area on Saturday morning.
In Romania, fighter jets were last alerted on Thursday evening and the civilian population was warned about an unidentified aerial target coming from the Black Sea and flying in at a depth of 14 kilometers above the mainland.
