  • The Barça defender signed a document by which he went on to collect 142 million gross in five seasons (2017-2022). Bartomeu’s board accused him of causing “very serious damage” to the club.

Hours after revealing the Messi’s demands to renew for Barça in 2020, the newspaper ‘El Mundo’ has published details of the contract Gerard Piquéwhich went on to become the “world’s highest paid centre-back” at the same time that an internal report was prepared that reflected “the most serious damage” that he caused the club for his private business.

According to the newspaper, the problems began with the documentary on Griezmann’s decision, in which the French striker expressed his rejection of Barça’s proposal. Produced by the company Kosmos, property of the defender, the business strategy became a clear problem for the club. That circumstance led to Bartomeu to request a report detailing the possible breaches in which Piqué could have fallen.

Barça studied to sanction the player, but the possible “media pressure” and the intention that he fulfill his contract until the last season led to discarding that option. According to El Mundo, the footballer was guaranteed in his contract 142 million euros gross during the five seasons of validity, from 2017-18 to 2021-22. This meant a figure of 28.4 million gross per course, which could increase if some bonuses related to objectives were met.
