The news was announced in a ceremony on the Croisette beach organized by the partners and sponsors of the Fortnight – who are the ones who present the awards for this parallel section of the famous festival on the French Riviera-, where Martín Gimeno was not present, as he had to return to Barcelona.

The director of photography of “Creature”, Alana Mejía González, and the film’s production assistant, Claudia Vila, collected the award on her behalf, and went on stage to read some words that the Catalan director had prepared.

“You can’t imagine how I would like to be there, but I had to go back to Barcelona”, said Martín through the team for which this is his second feature film.

The producer was particularly grateful for the reception at Cannes d’una “risky” movie which deals with complex issues about female sexuality. This award, he said, shows that writing it and asking these questions “was worth it”.

As a colophon, the two members of her team have played an audio in which Martín herself made the words of the main character of her film her own, which she herself interprets in some parts: “My vulva throbs. Thank you so much“.

In “Creature”, the protagonist, Mila, does not enjoy sex with her partner, Marcel (Oriol Pla), and through scenes from his childhood and adolescence, the viewer will gradually discover that his problem dates back to when he was just four years old and began to say, in front of his parents’ astonished gaze: “My vulva is throbbing” .

For the film, Martín (Barcelona, 1992) was interested in “trying to know what happens to all of us with the body, with sex and with desire”, as he explained in an interview with EFE on the occasion of the premiere of the film in Cannes.

Martín Gimeno and “Creatura” succeed Mia Hansen-Løve and “Una bonita mañana” as winners of the Label Europa Cinemas award.

This is the first year of this parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival as “Cineastes Fortnight”, instead of “Filmmakers”, a gesture that the organizers pushed last summer out of commitment to gender equality .

Over the years, filmmakers like George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Ken Loach o Jim Jarmusch.
