The stars? There will be someone to photograph, says president Gian Luca Farinelli. Eighteen films in the competition, three Italians. Paola Cortellesi opens. Double Monica Bellucci, from Diabolik to Maria Callas. The Hollywood strike is making itself felt

ROME To the inevitable question about the presence of the stars, the president of the Rome Film Festival (18-29 October) Gian Luca Farinelli, calls out those who will be there and says, seasoning the Emilian bonhomie with a touch of annoyance: Someone to photograph there will be. So here is Binoche, Triet, Lindon, Ccile de France and between Paris and Rome Valeria Bruni Tedeschi in Franco-Belgian style. Then Jasmine Trinca, Albanese, Ozpetek with Nuovo Olimpo, Mastandrea, Margherita Buy for Volare (directoral debut), Paola Cortellesi who opens with There’s Still Tomorrow.

Alba Rohrwacher has the long-awaited My Hair Hurts by Roberta Torre, in which the actress, blonde for the occasion, sees Monica Vitti as a projection of herself, identifies herself, believes she is a projection of herself and talks in the mirror with Mastroianni, with Sordi, with Antonioni. And the title quotes the cult joke that the director, taking a poem by Amelia Rosselli, entrusted to Monica Vitti. And for: Not a film about her, but about the loss and invention of her memory, says the artistic director Paola Malanga who rushes hastily. Monica Bellucci gives a speech as, here she is in Diabolik who are you? (final chapter of the Manetti) and in her documentary on her three years of theater in the company of Maria Callas. Director Tom Volf who also presents, for the first time in color, the film about Callas’ late debut, at 35 years old (on the centenary of her birth) at the Paris Opera in 1958, in front of Pompidou, Chaplin, Bardot, where Maria showed her very modern, hieratic gestures.

Eighteen films in competition, three Italian: in addition to Cortellesi and Torre, Edoardo Gabriellini. Malanga has divided the selection between good films that we want to see and not good ones, there are no pink quotas of any kind, neither female nor preferential lanes for Italians. The Hollywood strike naturally had an impact, an epochal protest involving not only US talent but also those of other countries living there. In Rome there will be those who can come.

Between rubbing and raining kisses, it is said that the Festival photographs the souls of Rome, a large bazaar, the poetic cinema of Miyazaki (The Boy and the Heron) and the numbers of new episodes of Mare Fuori. The series: Archibugi per La Storia by Elsa Morante, Genovese from the bestseller I leoni di Sicilia, Tornatore with the unreleased Camorrista filmed at 29 years old (this was his cinema debut in another format). The retrospectives, the homages, no one is left by the wayside, Fellini, Godard, Losey, Ugo Gregoretti, Dario Argento…

La Festa is the city of women: lifetime achievement award to Isabella Rossellini, Emma Dante in Misericordia…Men are in brackets, the directorial debut of Michele Riondino and a serious role for Christian De Sica. Red threads for noir, grotesque and musical films. Zucchero, the restoration of Ciao ni ‘by Renato Zero, Giorgio Gaber, the U2 concert in ’97 in Sarajevo, a documentary with unpublished materials on Keith Richards and that of Trudie Styler on Naples (there’s her husband, Sting ). Waiting for The Performance (by Arthur Miller) with Jeremy Piven.

I always hear talk of crisis, but there is no art in better shape than cinema – says Farinelli – a huge edition, a program rooted in the beauty of Rome. The Festival turns 18, and due to past political vicissitudes it proves three times as old.
