The fire has devastated a total of 59,568.76 hectares of surface area so far from 2023 to July 9, which represents 70 percent more than the average for the decade (35,040 hectares) and 18.7 percent less. than in the same period a year ago, according to data from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO).

In the first four months of the year the fire claimed 39,381.42 hectares; and a month later, the burned hectares reached 47,784.98 from January to May, almost triple that of the same period in 2022. However, the abundant rains in June could have contributed to retaining the fires.

What has elapsed in 2023 stands out for the high number of large forest fires (GIF), since 15 fires of more than 500 hectares have been registered, the highest number until July 9 of the last ten years, and which even exceeds the 12 GIFs from last year.

Specifically, this year 5,007 accidents have been recorded, a figure lower than the average for the decade, of 5,044 fires, and even lower than that of 2022, when 5,561 accidents were registered. Of these, 3,241 were attempts, that is, they were extinguished before a surface hectare had burned, and another 1,766 were fires of more than 1 hectare, and of these, 15 were classified as large forest fires.

The most affected is the northwest region

It should be noted that the Ministry’s figures consulted by Europa Press, by type of vegetation, 38,320.86 hectares of scrubland and open forest burned; 16,701.77 hectares of wooded area and the remaining 4,546.13 hectares of pastures and pastures.

By areas, the most affected is the northwest region, which accumulates 46.74 percent of the claims that occurred. In addition, in that region 66.77 percent of the total burned forest area and 34.36 percent of the wooded area were registered.

For their part, the interior Communities hosted 30.63 percent of the fires. In these regions, 47.11 percent of the wooded area and 24.63 percent of the forest area have been burned.

Meanwhile, in the Mediterranean 22.15 percent of the fires have occurred and there 18.52 percent of the wooded area and 8.58 percent of the forest area burned. Finally, the Canary Islands accumulates barely 0.4 percent of the claims, with 0.01 percent of the total burned wooded area and 0.02 percent of the entire forest area.
