MTS has launched the first custom 5G pilot network in St. Petersburg ahead of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), the company said. Subscribers of the network will be able to connect to 5G with a data transfer rate of up to 1.5 Gbps on the territory of 16 popular sites in the city, including the main SPIEF site – Expoforum.

“The use of data traffic in the pilot network is not charged, is not limited in volume and speed, including when using a smartphone as a Wi-Fi access point and working in file-sharing networks,” the message says.

Megafon has also deployed a 4G and 5G test network in St. Petersburg, the company’s press service said. A test area of joint use of 4G and 5G is deployed on an area of 10 sq. km near Nevsky Prospekt and Expoforum and is available to all subscribers with devices that support the technology.

“This is the widest test zone with access to 5G class services in Russia without any restrictions on the number of subscribers. Testing is carried out in the frequency ranges of the existing 4G networks (FDD) and the new millimeter-wave range, ”the message says.

The maximum possible speed of mobile Internet in a combination of different frequency bands is up to 1 Gbps in the existing ranges and up to 4.1 Gbps, Megafon stressed.

SPIEF will take place from 2 to 5 June at the Expoforum Exhibition Center. In 2020, SPIEF was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but this year it was decided to hold it in person.
