On September 16, the first edition of Mercado Felchi takes place in Córdoba, an exhibition of clothing, jewelry, sculptures and unique objects made with recycled materials.

The proposal is inspired by upcycling or supra recycling: a technique that allows waste to be transformed into new objects, prolonging the useful life, in a creative way, of those objects that apparently are no longer useful.

The term began to be used in the ’90s in the textile field and in the search for sustainable fashion to revalue unused garments and textiles, and then expanded to other areas.

In this case, Mercado Felchi seeks the prominence of upcycling, as an action, support and poetics that crosses contemporary artistic practices and current design.

For the organizers, producer Marti Soto and curator Carmela Trejo Rodríguez, it is a meeting point for art, design and sustainability. And the exhibition and marketing space has “a local flavor and a global impact,” because sustainability knows no borders.

According to Soto, “the rejection and resignification of waste of any type has a very large impact at a global level and in all aspects of our lives and we know that climate change affects everything.”

At the same time, he stated that they know the Córdoba scene and there are many artists and designers with this type of media.

“They are people who are concerned about the environment and work with waste in their projects and develop environmental awareness,” he highlighted.

He also highlighted that there is no space that brings together this type of work, which is why “we give significant importance to artistic production and design.”

For her part, the curator expressed that “upcycling is on the cultural agenda and more and more artists and designers want a horizon without garbage, who appropriate the materials and recycling techniques to activate a different present and future.

And he added: “In my role, being able to put together a visual discourse of all this is very stimulating and a challenge.”

In the same space, two exhibition proposals will be presented, with 13 exhibitors (jewelry, textile production, sculpture, clothing, bookbinding, printing).

In addition, 24 students from the contemporary art department at the Blas Pascal University will make a large-format installation with electronic waste produced by the same university house.

There will also be an exhibition of the “Surplus” collection from the Estudio Joya workshop that gives new meaning to disused tools.

The event with free admission already projects monthly editions and in the coming months plans to incorporate talks and workshops.

Day and place: the appointment is September 16 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Calasanz 32, Alberdi neighborhood, Córdoba. With free entry.
