The Zaragoza-Canfranc line has been chosen for testing the first FCH2Rail hydrogen train —Fuel Cell Hybrid Power Pack for Rail Applications—, which uses a bimodal propulsion system. The tour has successfully completed its first test session.

The train has obtained authorization to test the new technology in a wider range of power and energy demand conditions, which more accurately simulate different commercial services. Thus, the train will run on different lines of the Spanish network, especially in Aragon, Madrid and Galicia, under demanding climatic and operational conditions.

It is a demanding route with steep slopes, which have put the new generation system to the test. On the electrified parts of the line, the train ran in fully electric mode, while on the non-electrified sections, the train ran in hybrid mode, combining power from hydrogen fuel cells and batteries.

This is thanks to the fuel cell hybrid system, with its six fuel cell modules. Toyotawith second generation technology.

In this way, it will be possible to carry out a more complete evaluation of this new technology on board, which seeks to offer a sustainable alternative to the conventional diesel propulsion that is still used on many lines.

The hydrogen train is part of the FCH2Rail consortium, a project that started in early 2021 and is scheduled to last until the end of 2024. The consortium includes the Spanish companies Renfe Operadora, Adif, CAF and the National Hydrogen Center; the Portuguese IP (Infrastructures of Portugal); the German companies DLR and STT, and Toyota Motor Europe (TME), which provides the fuel cell integration service.

It is partly funded by the European Commission’s Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking. It also has the participation of: Iberdrola (green hydrogen), Shie-Arpa (high pressure H2 supply solution) and Ercros (green H2 for mobility applications).
