The first hydrogen turbines for power generation will appear in Russia by 2027

In Russia, by about 2027, it is planned to create the first turbines for power generation, which will use hydrogen as a fuel. This was stated by the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov, speaking at a meeting of the Russian-Italian Council for Economic, Industrial and Monetary and Financial Cooperation.

“In the horizon of five to six years, we expect to complete work on the creation of hydrogen turbines to transfer part of the power generation to the most environmentally friendly fuel,” said Manturov, quoted by TASS. The minister recalled that prototypes of hydrogen buses have also been created in Russia, their serial production is planned to begin in 2023.

He also noted that he sees prospects for the growth of mutual Russian-Italian investments, primarily in connection with the implementation of the Arctic LNG-2 project by Novatek. It became known last week that French banks were banned from financing the Russian project due to pressure from environmental organizations.

In mid-October, the Ministry of Industry and Trade published a map of the production of low-carbon and high-carbon hydrogen and ammonia, which included 33 projects in 18 regions of Russia. The department noted that Russian hydrogen projects will contribute to the decarbonization of industry, energy and the entire national economy. Gazprom has already announced its desire to participate in the implementation of pilot projects for hydrogen energy in Russia. The development of the “hydrogen economy” began against the backdrop of the government’s desire to achieve a carbon neutral economy by 2060.
