The sun on Earth can only be seen a few times a day from its perfect orbit around Earth, as seen by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS). This image shows the exact moment in which, from the perspective of the ISS flying over a region of the world immersed in night, the first rays of morning light appear to illuminate part of the atmosphere. Below, the surface of the earth appears as dark as the sky above. NASA Astronomer Matthew Dominick took the image on August 15, 2024, while the ISS flew over the Pacific Ocean.
