The first methane tanker with a shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bound for the Gijón regasification plant will arrive at the port of El Musel on Monday. The arrival of the ship “Mv Energy Universe”, consigned to Marítima del Principado, is expected for 2:00 p.m. and it is expected to remain anchored for several days awaiting berthing instructions, which is estimated to happen –pending confirmation– next Friday, the 30th.

The “Mv Energy Universe” transports a consignment of 156,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas. The discharge at the Gijón regasification plant, the first since construction of the facility was completed in November 2012, will be of a technical and not yet commercial nature. The operation is part of the preparations for the start-up of the plant, with the verification, through the first discharge of gas, of the correct operation of the installation.

Enagás, the majority owner of the regasification plant (the rest of the capital belongs to Reganosa), will end next Friday the open period for marketing companies to submit binding offers for the capacity offered by the terminal. The process will end with the allocation of long-term logistics services. In the previous (non-binding) phase, between March 6 and 26, 16 marketers expressed interest in using the plant.

The ship “Mv Energy Universe”, built in 2019, and framed by its magnitudes in the Large LNG segment, is 300 meters long and 49 meters wide, and a cargo capacity of 166,000 cubic meters. Its pumping capacity is 13,200 cubic meters per hour, so unloading the cargo it transports could take almost 12 hours. It is the largest gas ship that has arrived at the port of Gijón.

The Maritime Company of the Principality, in charge of servicing the methane tanker scale, has extensive experience in the consignment of liquid bulk.

The Enagás terminal in Gijón, whose commissioning has been a reiterated aspiration for ten and a half years, has a storage capacity of 300,000 cubic meters, has a berthing line with a draft of 14.5 meters and has a loading arm and three unloading arms of 6,000 cubic meters per hour each. Although it was originally conceived as a plant for the regasification of liquefied gas and subsequent injection into the gas pipeline network, it will come into service – given the existing regasification overcapacity in Spain – as a logistics plant to store gas and re-ship it on ships of smaller size destined for other European countries. Only a residual part will be injected into the network for reasons of a strictly technical nature.
