Märtha Louise and Durek Verrett got married on Saturday. A few hours later, the Norwegian royal family published a photo of the bride and groom.

It is the climax of their love in front of a breathtaking backdrop: Norwegian Princess Märtha Louise and self-proclaimed shaman Durek Verrett tied the knot on Saturday on the picturesque Geirangerfjord. More than two years after their engagement, the 52-year-old and her partner, who is three years younger than her, said “I do” at a ceremony in a closed tent with no public access.

At around midnight, the Norwegian royal family released an official photo of the bride and groom and their families. Märtha Louise and Durek Verrett are in the middle of the photo. The princess is wearing her wedding dress with an XXL train and is holding her bouquet. Next to the 52-year-old are her parents, King Harald V and Queen Sonja. Behind Märtha Louise are her three daughters Maud Angelica, Leah Isadora and Emma Tallulah.

The Norwegian royal family captioned the snapshot: “Congratulations to Princess Märtha Louise and Durek Verrett, who were married today, August 31st, in Geiranger. The royal family was present to celebrate the newlyweds.”

During the wedding preparations there had been several problems, most recently over an exclusive contract with the celebrity magazine “Hello!”: Contrary to all conventions, the bride and groom had given the exclusive image rights to the wedding ceremony and reception to the British magazine for an unknown sum. “Hello!” had published a photo of the bride and groom on Instagram during the wedding reception.

A Netflix team is said to have also secured the film rights. The Norwegian media, however, were excluded from the most important moments of the wedding – a farce in the view of many.

The bride and groom were shielded from view with white sheets around the wedding ceremony. However, footage from TV2 briefly showed the princess in her white wedding dress and the groom in a tuxedo receiving a hug from King Harald V. As the princess’s husband, the 49-year-old is now an official member of the royal family. However, he will not receive a title.

“It was so beautiful. It was a completely fantastic experience,” said Märtha Louise about the wedding when she and her husband finally appeared before reporters and onlookers that evening. “I cried so many times,” reported Durek Verrett. “It was phenomenal.” It was breathtaking to see Märtha Louise in her dress for the first time.

After afternoon tea and cocktails in a nearby hotel, the big wedding celebration awaited the bride and groom and the 350 invited guests in the evening. Before the ceremony, numerous guests walked across a red carpet, many of them in traditional Norwegian costume.

While King Harald V and his son Crown Prince Haakon wore tuxedos and suits, respectively, Queen Sonja, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Hereditary Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus also wore traditional costumes. Mette-Marit’s son from a previous relationship, Marius Borg Høiby, was not there. Allegations of violence have been made against him this month.
