Fish (Flash 90)

The Ministry of Health clarifies the issue of purchasing the fish and treating them at the customer’s home, before Shavuot and especially among at-risk populations. A particularly dangerous virus that can be infected Vibrio vulnificus, a violent bacterium found naturally in seawater and beaches, and in fish ponds, especially in pangasius, mullet and sea bass.

The bacterium is usually found in fish scales, fins, gill area and tail. Most of the disease in humans occurs in the summer when the seawater temperature / growth ponds are at their peak and allow the bacterium to thrive and reproduce.

More in-

Human morbidity is caused in most cases by the consumption of fish and seafood that have not been fully and properly cooked. In this case, the signs of illness will in most cases be limited to the digestive system but in cases where there are also background diseases such as liver failure (mainly due to alcoholism), kidney failure, immune suppression or in people with iron metabolism problems, the bacterium can enter the bloodstream and cause salivation. Blood as well as for necrotic procedure of muscle membranes.

Another equally common route of infection is as a result of an open wound or a puncture from the fish fins. In this case, the bacterium can penetrate through the skin injury and cause a complicated illness (“carnivorous bacterium”) that requires aggressive and prompt medical treatment. This injury can be easily caused when cleaning fish that may carry the violent bacterium on their body, especially in people who are not professional in cleaning fish and do not use protective gloves.

It is important to note that most cases of illness that occurred in Israel were due to direct contact with fish and when cleaning fish (especially tilapia and carp) and occurred due to injury. That is, the bacterium penetrated the skin through visible or microscopic incisions and caused an acute infection. The Ministry of Health has therefore issued official recommendations to consumers, as well as binding official guidelines for fish sellers.

Among the guidelines:
Fish should only be bought from authorized places that have a business license.
Make sure the fish displayed in the storefront refrigerator refrigerator is coated with ice chips.
Do not buy fish directly from fish ponds or open stalls where proper cooling conditions are not maintained.
Direct contact with live or fresh fish should be avoided and it is recommended to use protective gloves for this purpose.
Be sure to buy fish only after it has been cleaned of fins, scales, gills and abdominal organs.
Be sure to get fish delivered home – only if there is ice in the bag in which they were transported.
Patients with chronic diseases or with open wounds on the hands – it is recommended to avoid any contact with fish.
