the five technological trends of 2022

Time.news – The “new Internet” is the basis of everything: “A new network concept suitable for the future of work, which understands in advance of failures and is able to divert data traffic to less congested areas of the network, ensuring optimal performance ”, explained Paolo Campoli, Head of Global Service Provider at Cisco. An “ad a service network” in which everything, from connectivity to the cloud, is “a la carte”. The services are ordered as dishes in the restaurant, choosing from a menu. An approach that could even lead to “rethinking the subscription model”. 2022 will also be the year in which “5G will begin to make sense of large investments”, with applications growing at an industrial level, and in which networks – as critical infrastructures – will welcome the trend towards sovereign data and national clouds. .

The evolution of the cloud will push “change within business organizations, destined to grow further over the next year ”, explained the head of Cisco Southern Europe Architecture Enrico Mercadante. The pandemic has increased the sensitivity of users, who expect higher quality. More than 70% of consumers perceive a misbehaving app as a disrespect and are therefore willing to change easily.

The third trend concerns the future of work. A “hybrid” future, just like the experience lived during the presentation of Cisco Italia: a conference with speakers and guests partly in presence (from the CyberSecurity Innovation Center in Milan) and partly remotely, with the CEO Gianmatteo Manghi materialized from Rome through a full-length hologram. If the pre-Covid was the era of presence and the pandemic the time of the remote, today companies are experimenting to find a new balance. The office must be a place that is not only functional and safe but also “attractive”, also calibrated on the basis of digital spaces. According to the data presented, in fact, 98% of the events will have at least one remote participant. “We don’t know how it will evolve but we can say that in the world of hybrid work there will be people at the center”, explained Michele Dalmazzoni, Head of Collaboration Southern Europe. “Putting the human being at the center does not only mean flexible work but transforming the office into a meeting place”, added Manghi. This is why Cisco, after the two open spaces in Milan (within Talent Garden) and Naples (at the Federico II University), is preparing to land in Florence.

The fourth trend is transversal to the previous ones: “Cybersecurity – stated Fabio Florio, head of the Italian Cybersecurity Center – must be an essential element of any project of technological innovation, digital transformation, evolution of services “. Security driven by increasingly advanced and integrated solutions, with a “Zero Trust” approach. Literally it means “zero trust”: it means that users and devices access to a corporate network must take place only and only with authorization. In an ecosystem where nobody is trusted, managing passwords correctly (i.e. differentiating them from each other and changing them frequently) risks becoming a complex activity, as well as a weak point (81% of the attacks stems from the theft of credentials). This is why cybersecurity will have to strive for simplification. According to Florio, we are moving towards “a world without passwords, in which access to systems, services and applications is not controlled by codes that are lost but through identification and behavior parameters, such as security keys and biometric recognition”. Credentials, in other words, stop being something to remember to become something that every individual possesses.

Last but not least is the theme of sustainability. “Ecological and digital transition – said the Ad Manghi – are simply two sides of the same coin”. Today telecommunications account for 3-4% of global emissions (more or less as much as civil aviation). But it’s not just about reducing the impact of networks and data centers. Efficient infrastructures and solutions enable the transformation of entire sectors such as agriculture, smart factories, smart grids. “In this way – said Campoli – the impact of telecommunications increases tenfold”. “The new digital mission – added Mercadante – is to close the circle of the circular economy, breaking the chain that links the increase in GDP with that of emissions”. To do this, “it is necessary to create new skills and new ecosystems around digital sustainability”.
