The Ministry of Science and ICT’s Postal Service Headquarters announced on the 11th that it will issue 576,000 commemorative stamps for the Philately Week introducing the royal ensigns of the Joseon Dynasty to commemorate the ‘2024 Republic of Korea Stamp Exhibition’ to be held from the 18th to the 24th.

The royal flag refers to the flag used to elevate the status of an event and to show the dignity of the host when a member of the royal family passes through. The commemorative stamp consists of the Hongmundaegi and Giraffe flags used by the Joseon royal family.

The background of the stamp is the 7th panel out of the 8 panels of the ‘Hwaseongneunghaengdo Folding Screen’, which depicts the procession returning to Hanyang after the 60th birthday celebration of Hyegyeonggung Hong, mother of King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty.

The Hongmun Flag is a red flag with a blue dragon on a red background, and is the flag that stands at the very front of the parade. It indicates that it is a sacred area and that the parade symbolizing the king is about to begin.

The Giraffe Flag is a flag with a picture of a giraffe, an imaginary animal, and was used for the Crown Prince and Crown Princess. The giraffe is an imaginary animal that resembles a deer but has the tail of a cow and the hooves and mane of a horse.

The Korea Post holds the Korea Stamp Exhibition every year during the Philately Week to encourage stamp collecting and to spread stamp culture, and also issues commemorative stamps. The ‘2024 Korea Stamp Exhibition’ is scheduled to be held on Nodeul Island under the theme of ‘Past, Present, and Future Seen through Stamps’.
