The Boyukshor floating solar power plant, unique for Azerbaijan, with a capacity of 100 kW, has started operating, and a ceremonial official opening will be held at the end of July, an informed source exclusively told Trend, Day.Az reports.

“The Spanish company Gamma Solutions, using a grant from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), built a 100 kW photovoltaic system on Lake Boyukshor near Baku. Three main panels operate on the principle of a solar battery, when a direct current photovoltaic generator uses the effect of converting solar energy into electrical energy,” the source explained.

This project is part of ADB’s regional initiative, Floating Solar Energy Systems Development, covering Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan.

Gamma Solutions operates in about 20 countries worldwide, with a portfolio of over 50 renewable energy projects (photovoltaic and wind power plants) worldwide.

“This is the first project of its kind in Azerbaijan, it has 100 kW of alternating current capacity, of which 95 kW is directly for the floating part of the station (FPV) and 5 kW for the land part,” the source noted.

It should be noted that the share of renewable energy sources in the overall energy balance of Azerbaijan (including hydropower) currently amounts to 15%.

By 2030, Azerbaijan plans to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the country’s energy capacity to 30-33%.
