The fluffiest robot of CES 2021 is back thanks to Casio

by time news usa

The Moflin AI pet robot, available in gray and blonde, is priced at ¥59,400 (approximately $400) and is set to begin shipping on November 7. Currently, there is no information on availability outside of Japan.

Moflin is designed to be a responsive companion, requiring not just cuddles but also verbal interaction to react with movements and cute sounds. These experiences will contribute to its unique personality. “Moflin has the ability to learn and its personality will develop based on how it is treated,” said Vanguard founder Masahiko Yamanaka in a promotional video.

This AI pet features Bluetooth connectivity, allowing it to connect with a companion app. It charges in a cozy nest, which enhances the illusion of a real pet. While charging, Moflin simply goes to sleep. Additionally, its fur is removable for easy cleaning.

Vanguard previously ran successful Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns for Moflin in 2020 and only began shipping to backers in late 2023. Manufacturing and distribution are now under Casio’s management.

Expert Discussion

To provide insight into the implications of AI companions like Moflin, we invited a panel of experts:

  • Dr. Emily Chen, Robotics Researcher
  • Dr. Samuel Rogers, AI Ethics Specialist
  • Laura Sanchez, Pet Behaviorist

Discussion Points

Moderator: Welcome, experts! Moflin is designed to interact and learn from its users. What do you think about the emotional implications of having an AI pet?

Dr. Emily Chen: It’s fascinating! AI companions can potentially fill the emotional void for individuals who may not have traditional pets. However, we must also consider the psychological impacts of such relationships.

Dr. Samuel Rogers: Exactly. While AI can mimic emotional responses, they lack true consciousness and feelings. Users need to understand the limitations of these interactions.

Laura Sanchez: Moreover, the development of these AI pets might impact how we perceive real animals. It’s vital to ensure that real pets are not overshadowed by technology.

Moderator: Great points. What are the ethical considerations we should keep in mind as this technology progresses?

Dr. Samuel Rogers: We should advocate for transparency in how these systems work and how data is managed. Users must know what they’re engaging with.

Dr. Emily Chen: And there should be clear guidelines to prevent emotional manipulation by these AI companions.
