The main focus of the Committee on Legal Affairs in the European Parliament will be the rule of law. Issues related to the conflict of interest, issues of immunity and “European Magnitsky” are among the priority tasks for the committee. This is what MEP Ilhan Kyuchuk (“Renew Europe”/DPS) said in connection with his election to the position of Chairman of the Committee on Legal Affairs.

Kyucyuk recalled that it is from the Committee on Legal Affairs that the hearing procedure of the European Commissioners begins and therefore it is committed to deal with the issues related to the conflict of interests, issues related to immunities, which should protect the European Union (EU) from potentially external influence and last but not least – new legislative ideas for a possible “European Magnitsky”, which should include the fight against corruption. At the moment, this element failed to fit into the general concept of imposing sanctions in the EU, commented Kyuchuk, referring to “European Magnitsky”. According to him, “European Magnitsky” type legislation has always been a policy for the Group of European Liberals in the European Parliament and envisages expanding the sanctions package to include elements of corrupt practices.

In this commission, the main focus will be the rule of law, where there is much to build on as a European mechanism. The institutional arrangements and accompanying tools are in place, but these tools must win the trust of European citizens, said Kyučuk. According to him, it is a commission that deals with a wide range of issues, including the interpretation, application and monitoring of EU law in accordance with Union acts and primary law, the interpretation and application of international law, better law-making, the simplification of EU law. Ilhan Kyuchuk pointed out that one of the big problems in the EU is related to the bureaucracy. It is high time that the legislation, which mainly comes from the European Commission (EC), should be relevant to the expectations of European citizens, Kyuchuk believes, and added that recently there has been too much accumulation of legislation that should enter the legal field of the EU, which there is definitely a need for an impact assessment.

The mistake over the years was that we allowed ourselves to forge our political decisions with the understanding that European politics is foreign to Bulgaria. European policy cannot be external – it is internal, because it is related to every single issue of Bulgarian public importance, added the MEP, referring to issues such as Schengen, which, in addition to the present, also refers to the future of the country, has an impact on the national dignity of the Bulgarian citizen, as well as a number of negative consequences for the Bulgarian economy. Another such issue is related to the EU Mobility package. None of the European issues can be external to Bulgaria, Ilhan Kyuchyuk also stated, writes BTA.

Among the main priorities of the Committee on Legal Affairs will be the reduction of bureaucracy, the assessment of existing legislation before the fabrication of new legislation. Many of the ideas dictated by cabinet meetings are undoubtedly good, but they are not related to the problems of the citizens. If people do not find this legislation essential, it achieves the exact opposite and bureaucratizes businesses, small farms and ultimately slows down the economic rise of the EU, commented Kyučuk.
