Can the Motorola brand eclipse Samsung on the foldable phone turf? This is what we want to check with our test of the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra.

Finally

If we present smartphones that are often folded to Samsung and its Galaxy Z Flip, we must not forget that the Motorola brand also offers this format. phone for many years. In 2020, the company stands out by presenting its Motorola Razr 5G model. An impressive and efficient phone that makes it stand out against the big Samsung.

It’s 2024 and Motorola now offers its own Motorola Razr 50 Ultra, the true low-tech flagship of the brand equipped with many high-end components to stand out against Samsung Galaxy The Z Flip 6 was released during the same period. But does the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra have the shoulders ready to endure this task? This is what we will discover in this test of the new Motorola foldable phone.

Editor’s Note: This test was conducted entirely using copy taken by the brand.

A recap of our review of the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra

  • Very useful design especially for taking selfies
  • A very good stay and fast charging
  • Good handling even after hours of daily use
  • Successful photos
  • You also have to love the photos that are rich in color
  • Only three years of updates in 2024, not so much
  • Activities for the game that can be good for this price range

A design that does not leave a copy

Motorola Razr 50 Ultra is a foldable mobile phone with fairly small dimensions of 88.1 x 74 x 15.3 mm when folded. Its external screen is placed on the entire front of the device (unlike the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip) which allows more content to be displayed. This screen, however, tends to retain the fingers easily and that is a bit of a shame when you know that the latter is very pleasant to use regularly. All Motorola Razr 50 Ultra buttons can be found on the right edge of the device and they fall well under the thumb when holding.

The back of the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra has a simple green cover with two logos on top. This cover gives a premium feel to the device and is very soft to the touch in addition to preventing it from sliding on flat surfaces. All is well then!

The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra format is a lot of fun to hold on a daily basis when the phone is folded. We note the importance of the curved edges which allow the hands to more easily adapt to the shape of the device during use.

Once opened, the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra reveals a 6.9-inch screen with well-defined but asymmetrical borders. The open format of the smartphone, however, is very elongated and reaching certain sides of the screen is difficult with one hand.

A screen of urine, but which is not visible

The two screens of the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra are similar if we leave their dimensions. For both, it is an AMOLED LTPO panel with a refresh rate that can automatically vary to 165 Hz, this rate is, let’s face it, very impressive on paper because most high-end phones only go to 120 Hz for a while open. balancing devices in the range of 60 or 90 Hz very high frequency, however, are very useful because the perception of differences with the human eye beyond 120 Hz is very small. Let’s just hope that this rate does not affect too much on the freedom of the Razr 50 Ultra, which we will discuss later.

In terms of brightness, Motorola announces a peak of up to 3000 nits for its Razr 50 Ultra. Another impressive number, but one that is rather sad every day because the phone screen sometimes becomes unreadable, especially in direct sunlight. For once, the automatic brightness control is still close and the Razr 50 Ultra can sometimes think you’re in the dark even when you’re not there. This is mainly because the sensors are relatively small and you can easily see your fingers around the phone.

Fair enough, but one can expect better

Unlike many high-end Android smartphones in recent months, the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra is not equipped with the latest chip from Qualcomm, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The company has decided to trade some prices, but not to This chip is always charging, to change to Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC. XiaomiPoco or Realme.

On a daily basis, the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra does the job. Animations are fluid and it is possible to do many daily applications without experiencing screen freezes or even slow down.

For video games, the result is more mixed. Resource intensive titles generally launch with graphics set to “medium” and at 30 FPS. Titles such as Genshin Effect or Wuthering Waves can be pushed with their graphics to the max, but this is felt in the water flow which then falls during large processes loaded with animations. The phone also tends to heat up quickly after a few minutes of gaming if the graphics are more advanced.

Good photo skills, but you have to love color!

The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra only has two photo sensors of 50 Mpx each: the main lens and a 2x telephoto lens. It’s rare not to have an ultra wide angle on a phone in this price range, but why not after all.

During the day, and when the conditions are good, the photos taken by the Razr 50 Ultra are quite good. We will also notice very bright and sometimes saturated colors that do not leave much room for fidelity. A feature that is often found on the company’s smartphones, but which may please some. However, we noticed some minor details, but the photos are completely usable as is.

On the zoom side, the Razr 50 Ultra is equipped with a telephoto lens that can zoom up to x2. Beyond that, it will be a digital zoom. Photos taken at x2 are, undeniably, of better quality. It is even possible to push up to x3 or x4 without feeling the loss of much information. Obviously, photos lose information as the image is zoomed in and the digital noise will be felt more and more until you get unusable photos with maximum size.

Not much to say about the pictures. The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra does a very good job of spotting your subject and separating it from the rest of your shot. By using a Bokeh effect in the background, the smartphone manages to control the smallest details well so as not to blur like some hairs blowing in the wind.

The foldable form of the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra is also very useful for taking selfies. Whether using the phone fully folded or placed on a flat surface thanks to its unique format.

At night, things are more complicated for the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra. The colors are also very garish and the phone’s software processing will tend to force the flash to produce a sharp image, but to the detriment of the overall quality of the shot.

Very good performance coupled with fast charging

One of the biggest problems with our foldable smartphones is their battery life. It’s hard to have big batteries and manage phone heat well in such a small format! Motorola Razr 50 Ultra has a 4000 mAh battery which is already a small evolution of 200 mAh compared to its predecessor. But is this increase not only intended to control the phone’s new processor?

Unplugged at 8 am, the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra still showed more than 54% battery at the end of our day around 6 pm. A very respectable score! Get around 16 to 18 hours of use for the Razr 50 Ultra, which should allow you to use the phone for a day or more depending on your usage.

On the charging side, the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra is compatible with fast charging of up to 45 W. This is even 20 W more than for the new Galaxy Z Flip 6 from Samsung and it shows. The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra has the ability to recharge the battery in just under an hour and it also has a charging system for the first parts which allows you to charge enough to last a few more hours.

5G connectivity is available

We were able to try the Razr 50 Ultra with 4G and 5G communication bands. Unsurprisingly, we encountered no problems during our calls and our conversations were perfectly audible to both us and our partners.

The Razr 50 Ultra also includes compatibility with the Bluetooth 5.4 standard as well as NFC technology for payment with the phone. On the network side, the smartphone is compatible with 7g wifi for fast and smooth connections.

Our conclusion to the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra test

Motorola has been working on a foldable phone for years and it shows. Razr 50 Ultra combines a very useful original format with very good arguments such as a photo rich in colors (if you like it) and rather good performance.

If you come up against the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 specifically, the two phones are sold at the same price. We would tend to recommend the Motorola on the battery and charging side as well as on the practical side of the larger external screen. The Samsung phone, however, is above in terms of photography, performance and number of planned updates.
