“Watch all the videos… We need to embrace them and go out to develop Korean soccer.”
Coach Hong Myung-bo, who is returning to the helm of the Korean national soccer team after 10 years, has defended former Korea Football Association national team strengthening committee member Park Joo-ho, who exposed the selection process.
After the Hana Bank K League 1 2024 22nd round home game (0-1 loss) against Gwangju FC held at Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium on the 10th, Coach Hong Myung-bo revealed the reason behind his change of heart and acceptance of the position as national team coach at a press conference.
Coach Hong, who accepted the position of national team manager, prepared to face criticism for his final challenge in football, said of the controversial revelations made by former commissioner Park Joo-ho, “I watched the video and confirmed the content. My personal opinion is that Commissioner Park Joo-ho worked very hard through the connections he had.”
He then defended Commissioner Park Joo-ho’s actions by saying, “It must have been because there were difficulties there that he was able to say that. This kind of thing should happen more in the soccer world.”
Coach Hong said that in order for Korean soccer to develop, we must also listen to harsh criticism.
He emphasized, “If each person’s opinion is respected, those things can become one and move toward the goal. Commissioner Park Joo-ho’s words may sound uncomfortable, but it is important to embrace them and move forward to create better Korean soccer.”
Coach Hong has a connection with former member Park Joo-ho, having selected him at the 2014 Brazil World Cup 10 years ago.
Former member Park Joo-ho, who has been active in the power reinforcement committee for the past five months, uploaded a video criticizing the power reinforcement committee on his YouTube channel ‘Captain Pachuho’ on the 8th, the day the Korea Football Association appointed Coach Hong as the head coach of the national team.
He sparked outrage among fans by saying in the video, “There were many members who unconditionally supported the domestic coach,” and “The overall flow was towards electing coach Hong Myung-bo.”
He raised his voice, saying, “The past five months have been a waste. I have often thought that the power reinforcement committee is unnecessary. Nothing has been done according to procedure.”
He also said that regarding the process of appointing then U-23 coach Hwang Seon-hong as interim commander ahead of the A-match period in March, “the decision was made through a vote without much discussion.”
The Korea Football Association announced that it would take legal action against former Chairman Park, claiming that he had violated his ‘confidentiality agreement’.
