In summary:
- The Ford Capri returns as an electric crossover coupe.
- Range: Around 600 km, with rear or all-wheel drive
- The price starts at around 52,000 euros.
The Ford Capri is back – as an electric car. Instead of a muscle car, it’s now a crossover with a coupé roof that rolls off the production line at the Cologne factory. The recently introduced Explorer sister model is trying to score points with a range of more than 600 kilometers and performance values of more than 300 hp.
Dear Ford Motor Company, I don’t know what on earth your latest model is supposed to be, but I do know what it isn’t. It’s not a Ford Capri. Because I have a Ford Capri. Since 1977. I share it with Tony Mammoth. And it is beautiful. #Capri pic.twitter.com/O3POTUnZNA

This is what the Capri looked like in the 70s. The original is now a sought after classic car
Although the Capri shares the electric platform (MEB, modular electric equipment) bought from VW with the SUV Explorer, it appears to be visually independent. Not only with the coupé-like roof line, but also at the front, which is designed to be more sporty than beefy. The flat radiator grille, like the strongly shaped shoulder line and the rounded C-shaped rear window, are meant to evoke the model that gave it its name.

The history of Ford Capri
While the Explorer is primarily an American car, the Capri is a European phenomenon: The sports coupe, built in Cologne and England since 1969, borrowed from US pony cars, but was developed in and for Europe. Until the mid-1980s, it was a sporty trio with the Opel Manta and VW Scirocco, popular mainly with young drivers due to the relatively low prices for a lot of engine power.
At 4.63 meters, the Capri is about 15 centimeters longer than its platform brother with the same wheelbase, which is mainly due to the rear overhang. Above this is the luggage compartment with a capacity of 570 liters (1,510 liters with the seat folded down), which is covered by a large tailgate.
The basic architecture of the cockpit comes from VW’s modular system, but Ford does not avoid certain features such as the 14.6-inch upright display, which can be swiveled and acts as a cover for a secret lockable compartment. Between the driver and the front passenger is a center console with an XL storage space of 17 litres.

Range up to 627 kilometers
As for drive and battery, the crossover coupé starts exclusively with the long-range battery of at least 77 kWh, which can be combined with rear or all-wheel drive. In the first case, 210 kW/286 hp are available and the range is 627 kilometers.
The rear-wheel drive car accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. If there are two engines on board, the output increases to 250 kW/340 hp, and the range drops to 592 kilometers despite an additional two kilowatt hours of capacity. The Capri reaches 100 km/h from a standstill in 5.3 seconds.
Both versions can charge the wall box and the standard column up to 11 kW, the rear-wheel drive model has 135 kW on the fast charger, and the all-wheel drive version charges with 185 kWh. The rear-wheel drive car cuts from 10 to 80 percent in 28 minutes, the all-wheel drive car in 26 minutes. Other variants are likely to follow, including an entry-level model with a smaller battery.
Why only 80 percent?
Car manufacturers usually only specify the charging time of electric cars at fast charging stations up to 80 percent, because charging beyond this limit is much slower to protect the battery and avoid overheating. Faster charging maximizes efficiency by up to 80 percent and significantly reduces waiting time for users. Therefore, the 80 percent mark is already predetermined for the charging process in some electric cars.
Prices from around €52,000
In terms of price, the Capri is about 2,000 euros higher than the Explorer: prices start at 52,000 euros. Only a surcharge of a few hundred euros separates it from VW’s closest technological relative, the ID.5 Pro. Other competitors include Tesla Model Y, Volvo EC40 and Kia EV6.

But it will not stop with the two SUVs, Ford announced: The company based in Cologne wants to bring an electrified version of the Puma in 2024, a class below Explorer and Capri.
