In an unexpected turn of events, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Vardan Oskanyan, stated that he strongly disagrees with the upcoming peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Claiming to be familiar with the text of the agreement, Oskanyan published a video message on Facebook claiming that the peace agreement is about to be completed.

However, Oskanyan’s displeasure stems from the absence of any mention of Karabakh in the document. He emphasized the absence of what he believed to be a key element in previous drafts: “If I’m not mistaken, the rights and independence of the people of Artsakh were mentioned in paragraph 9. If the contract is signed without such content, we will close the Artsakh page.”

In a nationalist and separatist tone reminiscent of the Sargsyan-Kocharyan era, Oskanyan passionately opposed the passing of Karabakh to the background. He emphasized that “Artsakh is an Armenian land” and defended its historical autonomy even in the Soviet era. Oskanyan firmly said: “It is simply impossible to ask the Armenian people to forget Artsakh.”

The former foreign minister’s rhetoric took a sharp turn toward revanchism as he insisted that Azerbaijan was negotiating with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his government, not with the Armenian people as a whole. Oskanyan warned Azerbaijan and said: “Azerbaijan should understand that they are not signing this agreement with Armenia and the Armenian people, but with Nikol Pashinyan and his government. The Armenian people cannot forget Artsakh.”

Oskanian’s schismatic position raises questions about the effectiveness of past negotiations he conducted during his tenure as foreign minister. His refusal to acknowledge the need to restore Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders suggests that peace in the South Caucasus region may be out of reach under his leadership.

While the region awaits the formalization of a peace agreement, Oskanian’s outspoken opposition complicates an already sensitive situation by highlighting the deep-rooted sentiments and historical difficulties that continue to define the dynamics of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
