This 84-page issue presents the creations of middle school students in various genres of journalistic productions (reportage, interview and portrait), literary (poetry and storytelling) and artistic (comic strip and photo), all around the theme of the year: “Intangible heritage in Rabat”.

The publication of this magazine, the first of its kind in Morocco devoted to heritage and produced by young people aged 12 to 15, is part of the educational program “I discover my Heritage” of the Foundation for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage of Rabat, which aims to raise awareness among middle school students and educational executives of the importance of preserving cultural heritage.

The Foundation has opted, in accordance with the guidelines of HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa, for the theme of intangible heritage as the central axis of this year for its program “I discover my Heritage” dedicated to middle school students in Rabat, Salé and Témara, indicated Mouna Belbekri, head of educational programs at the Foundation for the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage of Rabat, in a speech for the occasion.

The Foundation, she said, relies on cultural and artistic education to educate young people, considering learners as a productive element that contributes to the process of transmitting heritage between generations under the supervision of their teachers.

The choice of “Roya” as the name of the magazine is part of the desire to highlight the vision of these young people on their heritage and the degree of their assimilation of the practices of their ancestors, their know-how and their knowledge transmitted from generation to generation, she explained, noting that this reflects the extent of their capacity to transmit this knowledge to future generations.

For his part, Eric Falt, Director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Office for the Maghreb in Morocco, praised the work carried out by the Foundation to serve and promote this rich heritage, stressing the importance of the partnership between UNESCO and the Foundation, which “makes it possible to develop initiatives to preserve intangible heritage in Morocco and Africa.”

In particular, he praised the “I discover my Heritage” programme, which adapted educational materials designed by UNESCO to the local context, with the aim of enabling young people to discover and assimilate the heritage of their city.

Mr. Falt further stressed the importance of the Foundation’s initiative to publish the magazine “Roya” which presents different perceptions and visions of this generation for its heritage.

This ceremony was an opportunity to highlight the importance of heritage education through art and culture with a rich and diverse program, punctuated by discussion sessions with the young creators who contributed to this publication, with their teachers and supervisors, as well as members of the program monitoring committee and the magazine jury, who reviewed the different stages of the publication’s production.
