The four charts showing how the war in Ukraine is stalled

by time news

It’s been a year that the world has been accumulating news about the war in Ukraine and counts dead, wounded and refugees in a dispute that has upset all international balances. The reality on the battlefront is very different from what the Kremlin had envisioned when it invaded the country: to quickly take control of all of Ukraine and overthrow Volodímir Zelenski. But the Ukrainian resistance forced the troops from Vladimir Putin to withdraw from key areas in the east and south of the country, and pushed the Russian president to order a partial military mobilization to deal with Ukrainian counteroffensives.

On the map, the evolution of events shows that the war is in one situation of stagnation for almost six months. According to data from theInstitute for the Study of War (ISW) of the United States, Russia’s last major advance came in mid-August, when Russian troops managed to 1,623.9 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory. Since then, Putin’s only moderately significant advance on Ukraine has been 496 square kilometers at the beginning of this February.

THE PROGRESS OF EACH SIDE, WEEK BY WEEK

The following chart summarizes the changes in control of Ukrainian territory week to week since February 24, 2022, the date of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As you can see, since mid-November there have been hardly any changes on the ground. The turning point that brought the conflict to a standstill was the withdrawal of Russian troops from Kherson.

In the first two weeks of the conflict alone, Russia achieved almost 78,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, mainly from the area of Donbass, in the east of the country. But from that point on, the rate of Russian advances dwindled week by week, even as they gained ground virtually every week until August. Since then, all the successes have fallen from the Ukrainian side.

The counter-offensives of Zelenskiy’s troops have had three big moments. In early April last year, Ukraine recovered within a week 26,376.5 square kilometers of territory and forced the Russian withdrawal from the north of the country. In mid-September, the recovery of almost 6,000 square kilometers it was Russia’s first setback at Kherson, culminating on November 10 with the withdrawal of the city after losing 3,500 square kilometers more territory

The map above and the one below clearly reflect that the victims of the war have been concentrated in the north and especially in the region of Donbass, in the east and southeast of the country. On the contrary, in some areas of the center and, especially, of the west of Ukraine (bordering with poland i Moldavia) there have been no casualties in these 365 days.
