The Francigena in Unesco 2025, with the thrust of Tuscany

Tuscany the region leader of the project that should lead to the recognition of the Via Francigena as a Unesco heritage. what was decided during the meeting that was held in Firenze with, among others, the president of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani, the regional councilor for tourism Leonardo Marras, the undersecretaries of state of the ministries of culture and foreign affairs, Lucia Borgonzoni and Benedetto Della Vedova, and the president of the European Vie Francigene, Massimo Tedeschi. On the occasion of the event, the memorandum of understanding was signed, which will last three years, between Tuscany, Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna, Liguria, Lazio and Valle d’Aosta which all together undertake to continue the common initiative towards the other European countries crossed by the Via Francigena, namely England, France, Switzerland and the Vatican City. What we have received – commented Giani – a very welcome recognition of the role and importance that Tuscany has played in defining the path that will lead us to the drafting of dossier through which we will officially arrive to present the candidacy of the Francigena in the Unesco heritage list. Undersecretary Borgonzoni said that the protocol marks a further and indispensable step towards the recognition of the Via Francigena as a World Heritage Site. The inclusion of this historic itinerary in the UNESCO list would allow to recognize its importance and extraordinary universal value, helping to promote the image of Italy in the world. Undersecretary Della Vedova then explained that the Foreign Ministry is looking with deep interest at the candidacy project of the Via Francigena to the World Heritage List, and expresses its appreciation for the effective collaboration between the various institutions involved in various capacities in the complex path which we know are the basis of the process of defining an application.
