The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) wishes to organize the IXth Games of the Francophonie. On July 28, 2023, these events will begin in Kinshasa, which will bring together the French-speaking countries of the world to take part in sports and cultural competitions.

Indeed, during a lively press conference this Wednesday, June 28 at the Martyrs stadium, Isidore Kwandja, director of the national committee of these games, gave details on various questions, in particular those of knowing if the DRC will be ready, whether the infrastructure will be completed on time or whether member countries will participate.

For him, the time is over for speculation and that the ninth games of the Francophonie will indeed take place in Kinshasa.

“We believe it is necessary to provide the national community and all member countries of the Francophonie with all the information necessary to remind them of the Games. The time is over for speculation but one thing is certain: the games of the Francophonie will indeed take place in Kinshasa. We know that there are several questions, namely: Will the DRC be ready? Are the infrastructures complete? Will member countries participate? But to all these questions, the answer is yes,” he says.

And to add:

“These 9th Francophone Games are a real challenge for the DRC. And despite the difficulties that our country is currently facing, the country’s authorities are determined to meet this challenge. The sports and cultural infrastructures which have been abandoned for a long time are in the process of being rehabilitated or completed. We are convinced that this edition will remain in the golden book of the Francophonie games. The holding of these games will be an exceptional moment where the cultural and sporting grandeur of the DRC and the French-speaking world will be exposed.

At 30 days from the start of the IX Games of the Francophonie in Kinshasa, the delay is noted on the side of the Tata Raphaël stadium which must in particular receive the football competition and the traditional fight. The village of games, installed at the University of Kinshasa, is not one hundred percent ready either. For the site of the Martyrs stadium, the national committee of these games will come into possession before the end of the week.

These assurances and guarantees given by Isidore Kwandja, at the 123rd meeting of the Permanent Council of La Francophonie, on June 21, in Paris, will not have been enough to convince Quebec, which has announced that it will not send athletes nor artists in Kinshasa for this edition. The overriding reasons for this decision are safety and health issues.

In addition, on June 8, New Brunswick (New window) announced that fewer athletes and artists than expected should represent it this year at the Games of La Francophonie due to the uncertainty surrounding the organization. of the event. The Government of New Brunswick has significantly reduced its registration numbers for these games. Instead of about 40 members, the delegation will have to include a dozen due to health, safety and logistical concerns.

The IX Games of La Francophonie are scheduled in 30 days, from July 28 to August 6. This event is supposed to receive more than 3,600 athletes and artists from the French-speaking world who have already registered to date. Of the 88 member states and governments of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), 41 are normally expected in Kinshasa for these games.
