An American medical doctor once drew attention to himself with the claim that he had invented a gadget that could make a diagnosis from a single drop of blood or even from the patient’s handwriting.

Albert Abrams, the inventor named the miracle device the Dynomizer, and in the 1920s quite a few people fell for his tale. Except for a skeptical doctor who discovered that the human blood fed into the Dynomizer, in which the radio-like machine had “discovered” traces of malaria and cancer, was actually that of a rooster.

The case of Abrams, who came up with many similar deceptive inventions during his career, would of course not raise unanimous doubts even today, since he was only sentenced to prison in 2022 Elizabeth Holmeswho with his company called Theranos, valued at $9 billion in its heyday, promised an easy, fast and cheap way to test a drop of blood taken from a fingertip, fooling the government, investors and patients, and it took 15 years to finally be exposed.
