The Council will allocate five million euros to free metropolitan transportation for those over 65 years of age, confirmed today Thursday Alfonso Ruedaafter the meeting of the Xunta council in which the reduction was approved.
The funds will be included in the 2024 budgets, so that the measure can be applied from January 1, as announced by the Galician Government.
The president framed the decision in a series of measures to reinforce care for the elderly, even more so in a community marked by the geographical dispersion of the population such as Galicia. The recent expansion of territorial coverage of public transport means that 91% of the population has a stop less than 500 meters away, sources from the Xunta said.
Rueda explained that the free will be applied in the 3,500 interurban transport linesand also to transport along the Vigo estuary – specifically in the connections with Cangas and Moaña – and the services of the old Feve in the Ferrol region.
The measure will mean that the elderly enjoy the same discount as the 160,000 young users of the card New People.
The decision of the Xunta council represents the beginning of the procedures for the free application to be applied through the Galician Mobility Card (TMG) which have 52,720 people over 65 years of age. The calculation of the budget for the measure is based on that user base.
Afterwards, the discount will be applied through the Meat 65+, which will launch the Consellería de Política Social e Xuventude and will include discounts similar to those from Carné Xove in different services.
The TMG currently has 592,061 users, whom it offers with a minimum discount of 10% that can reach 50% the more it is used.
