The Plenary Session of the National Assembly of Ecuador has given the green light to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China in a vote that has reflected a clear division of opinions. With 76 votes in favor, 23 against and 35 abstentions, this agreement has been approved, which has generated intense debates in the political and economic sphere of the country.
The motion of approval was presented by legislator Jonathan Parra, president of the Sovereignty and International Relations Commission, belonging to National Democratic Action (ADN). The favorable votes came from various political sectors, including the Social Christian Party (PSC), the ruling party and independent legislators.
However, the Citizen Revolution movement (RC) expressed its opposition to the FTA, arguing that it represents risks for the economy of the peasant sectors and could have negative effects on the environment. This position was reflected in the 23 votes against during the parliamentary session.
Before the vote, the president of the Legislature, Henry Kronfle, organized a conversation with the current Minister of Foreign Trade, Sonsoles García, and other former ministers of the branch, with the purpose of discussing the potential benefits of this trade agreement.
The session to analyze the FTA was initially set up on January 8, but was suspended due to the lack of votes for its approval. After his reinstatement on February 7, an intense debate took place in which 46 legislators participated.
The approval of this treaty marks a milestone in the trade relations between Ecuador and China, although its implications and repercussions will continue to be the subject of analysis and discussion in the coming days.
