The International Olympic Committee entered into “targeted dialogue with the file” of the Games in the Alps, reports “l’Equipe” this Wednesday, November 29, largely showing its preference for the French candidacy.

After Paris 2024, the Alps 2030? The French candidacy for the Winter Games in seven years is now the only one in the running, revealed the Team this Wednesday, November 29, which the IOC confirmed early in the evening. The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided “to enter into a targeted dialogue with the French Alps file for the organization of the 2030 Winter Olympics”. This is a phase of “in-depth” negotiations between the Olympic committee and the “future organizing country”, explains the sports daily, for whom the IOC “clearly” showed its choice by only discussing with France. The executive commission must then validate this choice and then submit it to the vote “for ratification of the session in 2024”.

On November 7, Laurent Wauquiez, president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (Aura), and Renaud Muselier, president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region (Paca), submitted the Alps’ candidacy to the IOC French. In the process, they presented, at the headquarters of the French Olympic Committee (CNOSF), in Paris, this file which remained very vague for the moment. It must be said that the two regional presidents only announced their common will on July 18. An extremely short deadline to put together an Olympic file. The Paca region has been working since January 2022 on a candidacy for 2034 or 2038, but the IOC and Emmanuel Macron have imposed, by Renaud Muselier’s own admission, to involve the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region for an early candidacy for 2030 The project is expected to cost 1.5 billion euros and would be based on 95% of existing sites.

Tuesday, November 21, the French project – based on 95% of existing sites with a budget of 1.5 billion euros – had its grand oral presentation before the IOC. For 45 minutes, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, Minister of Sports and the Olympic Games, Laurent Wauquiez and Renaud Muselier, presidents of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur regions, David Lappartient and Marie-Amélie Le Fur, at the head of the French Olympic and Paralympic committees, as well as Martin Fourcade and Marie Bochet, presented the assets of France

The last editions of the Winter Games were held in Beijing (2022), Pyeongchang (2018) and Sochi (2014). Before the potential Olympic Games in the French Alps, the 2026 Olympics will also be held partly in the Alps: from February 6 to 22, Italy will welcome athletes from around the world to Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. The last time that France hosted the Winter Olympics was in 1992 in Albertville (Savoie). The 2034 Winter Olympics should land in Salt Lake City, in the United States.

And too bad for the experts who continue to warn about the degradation and fragility of the Alps, faced with records of ice melting due to global warming.

Updated at 6:05 p.m.: the IOC confirms that France is the only candidate retained.
