Households have purchased almost 4% more eggs since January 2023 compared to last year, according to a study conducted by the Technical Institute of the Poultry, Rabbit and Fish Sectors (ITAVI).
The French will consume 229 eggs in 2023. This is nine more than in 2022. While the food sector is at half mast, household purchases increased by 3.8% from January to July compared to last year, over the same period.
These are the conclusions of a survey conducted by the CSA Institute for the National Egg Promotion Committee (CNPO). Among other indicators, 96% of the population considers the egg an essential part of the diet, 90% believe that it presents excellent quality/price ratio and 87% that it is a cheap alternative to consuming animal proteins. Another marker of the success of the egg: 97% of French people think it is good for their health.

Produce more in France
Nearly 9 out of 10 respondents believe that the French origin of eggs is an important selection criterion. After two years of avian influenza, the objective for the sector is therefore to produce more to reduce the share of imports. The self-sufficiency rate thus fell from 103% in 2021 to 96.5% in 2022. And Itavi forecasts, which count on an increase in production of 3.8% over the year 2023 by compared to 2022 could be revised downwards. Please note that World Egg Day is this Friday, October 13.
