Boris Vallaud, president of the socialist group in the National Assembly, in Matignon, September 14, 2023. JULIEN MUGUET FOR “LE MONDE”

Boris Vallaud, deputy (Socialist Party, PS) of Landes and president of the socialist group in the National Assembly, calls on the government to “get out of hypocrisy” and to promote the contribution of undocumented workers to the economy, with a view to the debates on the immigration bill expected in the Senate in November, then in the National Assembly in early 2024.

The left says little about immigration. And when she does, she is inaudible. For what ?

Probably because we haven’t talked about it enough. In the hierarchy of French concerns, questions of purchasing power, work, solidarity or the environment come first. But immigration worries the French. They may feel insecure in a context of economic and social fragility, and prejudices are stubborn. We owe them a speech of truth, by tearing this debate away from the lies stirred up by the extreme right and the Ciottist right. Is there a migratory flood? No. Is immigration increasing: yes, for thirty years, whatever the tricks of one side or the other.

What is the position of the Socialist Party in this debate?

Just as there is ecological planning, there needs to be an organization of migration policy. The French have no problem with immigration as such, but they demand respect for the republican order. However, the government is organizing disorder in the Republic: complex and poorly applied foreigners’ rights, prefectures without resources from which it is impossible to obtain an appointment, a lack of accommodation which supplies the camps, or even the blind delivery of OQTF [obligations de quitter le territoire français]unaccompanied minors on the street, the confinement of children in administrative detention centers, etc.

We have to put things right. Furthermore, we must get away from hypocrisy. Undocumented workers contribute to the economy. Illegal foreigners largely help to run a certain number of sectors such as catering, construction, public works, personal assistance services, etc. The French are mainly in favor of regularization through work because they are attached to the centrality of work in their lives, and no one wants to be in competition with someone who is not declared.

Does this mean that the PS has abandoned the diptych “firmness and humanity? »advocated by the former Minister of the Interior Manuel Valls, then taken up by Emmanuel Macron?
