The French at the polls for the second round of legislative elections

Seventy-six deputies were elected in the first round, obtaining more than 50% of the votes out of 25% of those registered (39 deputies from the National Rally and allies, 32 deputies from the New Popular Front, 2 deputies from the presidential camp and three deputies from Les Républicains and various right). There therefore remain 501 seats to be filled out of the 577 in the lower house.

The second round will see the participation of 1,094 candidates.

The overseas departments started voting on Saturday.

Polling stations opened at 8:00 a.m. in mainland France. They will close at 6:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. in major cities, at which time the first estimates will begin to fall.

After intense negotiations, 224 candidates qualified for the second round finally withdrew to block the far right given favorite for this second round by the polls.

This election is placed under high surveillance, the authorities fearing riots after the results of the election.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin reported on Friday the mobilization of 30,000 police officers and gendarmes on July 7 to prevent “the ultra-left and the ultra-right” from creating “disorder”.
