A little more than 21 days of “real” holidays, really devoted to relaxation or travel: that’s – only – what the French would take, who feel, at their highest level for 10 years, of not having enough of leave.

On average, the French are entitled to 28.6 days of paid vacation in 2022, according to the Vacation Deprivation study, conducted by Expedia. A survey conducted in France, but also among 15,000 people across North and South America, Asia-Pacific and Europe. It is much more than elsewhere. Thus, the United States, Mexico or even Thailand revolve around 20 days a year. Only here, 71% of the French believe that they do not have enough days of “real holidays”. A feeling that has been at its highest for 10 years, this study tells us.

This feeling is in fact that if the French were entitled to these 28 days and some, they actually only asked 25.4. And yet, four of those days were for personal obligations, such as babysitting, medical appointments, housekeeping and even unofficial sick leave. Total, they had only 21.4 “net” days of real vacation, really devoted to relaxation or travel.

Difficult to take holidays

The French are unable to take all of their leave due to four factors, according to Expedia. First, there is inflation, which weighs on the travel budget. More than one in ten French people, 11%, even say they have asked their employer to pay them for days of leave not taken. There is also the pressure felt at work. More than half of those questioned, 57%, deplore the lack of personnel in their company or in their sector of activity, which makes it more difficult to take leave. 53% say they are so overwhelmed at work that they have trouble planning all their vacations. As such, a third of them would like the four-day week very favorably: it would free them up time for their personal obligations and they could dedicate their leave to holidays. Among the brakes, there is also guilt. No less than 53% of those surveyed often feel the need to apologize or justify themselves for requesting days off from their employer.
