The French multinational Indigo, present in nine countries with 2,600 public car parks totaling 1.4 million spaces, arrives in Asturias with the acquisition of three car parks: the underground “car parks” of Paseo de Begoña and El Espigón Fomento Puerto Deportivo , in Gijón, and that of the San Agustín Hospital, in Avilés.

Indigo is the largest parking operator in Europe and one of the most important in the world.

The operation follows the agreement reached by the French group for the acquisition of 100% of the Spanish parking company Parkia from the Australian investment fund Igneo (First Sentier). When the operation is formalized, the Parkia car parks (including the three Asturian ones) will come under the brand of the purchasing group.

The French conglomerate is owned by the French funds Predica (49.2%) –which is one of the subsidiaries of Crédit Agricole Assurances– and Vauban Infraestructure Partners (34.33%), and by the German Meag (14.85%). . Until now, Indigo was the third most important group of car parks in Spain. With the absorption of Parkia Spanish Holding (fourth operator), Indigo will become, with 73 facilities totaling 129,500 spaces, the second largest parking manager in Spain, only behind Saba. Indigo already had 90,700 parking spaces in the country and will now add the 38,800 that Parkia has. The amount of the operation has been estimated at around 700 million euros.

Parkia, which has its historical origin in the Acciona group, was later owned by the insurance company Mutua Madrileña and the investment fund EQT until in 2016 both partners transferred ownership of their subsidiary to the Australian investment fund First, which was controlled by Commonwealth Bank of Australia. At that time, Parkia had its two current “parking lots” in Gijón, to which it later added the one the group has in Avilés.

The purchase of Parkia is part of a succession of corporate moves in the Spanish public parking sector that could give rise to new business concentrations soon if the ongoing talks prosper.
