BOLZANO. For exactly 335 years the Benedictine nuns lived in the Sabiona Monasteryon the famous rock of the Isarco Valley. Three years ago it was abandoned, but today life has returned to the convent. With the Cistercians of the Viennese Abbey of Heiligenkreuz A dog also arrived, named Coco, a faithful companion of padre Kosmas Thielmann.

The official handover took place this afternoon, September 7. The long, steep climb from the town of Chiusa to the monastery does not scare the former marathon runner. The traditional Tyrolean welcome reception (Landesüblicher Empfang) took place at the Church of Our Lady, with institutional representatives, the Chiusa music band and the Schützen from the district of Bressanone in attendance.


This was followed by a religious celebration presided over by the bishop. Ivo Muse in the monastery church, concelebrants Maximilian Heim, abbot of the Austrian Cistercians, and the dean of Chiusa Georg Martin. During the rite, the decree of appointment, the keys to the monastery and the tabernacle were handed over to the monk Father Kosmas Thielmann, the new “tenant” of Sabiona.
