The Emir of Kuwait who died on Saturday, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, was buried in front of the country’s televisions, after a private prayer attended by his family and close friends.
Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Sabah was buried on Sunday after a private ceremony attended by members of the ruling family and some relatives. Wrapped in the Kuwaiti flag, the emir’s coffin was taken to a mosque in Kuwait for prayers before a burial ceremony broadcast by state television.
Attendance was limited to members of the ruling family, who bid an intimate farewell to the ruler who reigned for three years.
The speaker of the Kuwaiti parliament was also present at the funeral, as well as the new emir, Sheikh Meshaal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, who is expected to take the oath of office before Parliament on Wednesday. He will receive condolences from the general public on Monday and Tuesday.
During Sunday’s ceremony, rows of relatives stood outside the deceased’s final resting place for prayers. Some squatted in front of his tomb and recited verses from the Quran.
In Kuwait City, large digital billboards displayed photos of the deceased and texts praising his “wisdom».
Following the death of the Emir, the flags were lowered to half-mast, the administrations will be closed for three days and 40 days of mourning have been decreed.
Political crisis
Born in 1937, Sheikh Nawaf was named crown prince in 2006 by his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and took over as emir upon the latter’s death in September 2020.
A rich oil state in the Gulf, Kuwait has been plunged for several years into a deep crisis between the executive and legislative powers, which is undermining hopes of reforms.

The new emir, Mechaal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, is 83 years old, and the question that now arises is whether the princely family will choose a younger leader.
The disappearance of Sheikh Nawaf and the advanced age of his successor increase uncertainties in a country shaken by divisions within the Al-Sabah family, some members of which accuse others of corruption or conspiracy.
The new emir, named crown prince in 2020, has spent most of his career in the field of security and intelligence. He notably held the post of Minister of the Interior.
