He future memorial dedicated to the Queen Elizabeth IIwho died two years ago, will be erected in the parque Saint James of London, right next to the Buckingham Palaceannounced this Saturday the British Government.

The site was chosen “for its historical significance and personal connection to the late sovereign,” the government said in a statement on the eve of the second anniversary of the queen’s death at the age of 96.

The memorial will be very close to the Mall, the long avenue that leads to Buckingham Palace and where royal parades pass on major events. Also nearby are the headquarters of the Commonwealth, the alliance of former British dominions to which Elizabeth II was very attached.

The future memorial, which the government says is intended to be a monument to her person but also a “space for contemplation and communion,” will also be close to statues of King George VI and the Queen Mother, Elizabeth II’s parents.

The location was chosen by a committee set up last year, following a selection process involving officials from the royal family, the government, experts and the general public.

The committee will now launch the design phase of the memorial and will communicate its final choice to the Prime Minister and King Charles III in 2026.

The Queen died on 8 September 2022 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after a 70-year reign. Her son Charles immediately succeeded her on the throne.
