AVL Racetech, an Austrian company, has developed a high-performance hydrogen combustion engine that not only demonstrates the potential of these engines as an alternative to electric vehicles, but could also be the future of engines in motorsport. .

In collaboration with the HUMDA laboratory in Hungary, AVL Racetech engineers have created a hydrogen engine with an innovative water injection system that addresses the power problem associated with these engines. The Port Fuel Injection (PFI) system introduces additional water into the air intake system, preventing premature ignition and ensuring stoichiometric combustion. The result is a two-liter hydrogen engine that produces 410 hp and 500 Newton-meters of torque between 3,000 and 4,000 revolutions per minute, with a power density of approximately 205 hp per liter.

According to AVL, simulations and dyno testing suggest this engine could compete globally in motorsport racing. For comparison, the World Rally Championship cars have 1.6 liter engines with around 380 hp, but with the assistance of electric motors, they can reach 520 hp for short periods.

This development not only has applications in racing, but hydrogen combustion engines can also facilitate the transition to zero-emission vehicles. Companies like Toyota are making progress in creating hydrogen-powered road vehicles, offering a promising alternative to electric vehicles. Toyota, for example, is developing a Corolla Cross H2 Concept with a hydrogen engine, and has announced plans to collaborate with Yamaha Motor on the development of a hydrogen-powered V-8 engine.

This innovation in engine technology is a step towards a more sustainable future in the automotive industry and could have a significant impact on motorsport competitions and road mobility.
