The G7 today called on the Venezuelan authorities to “publish with full transparency the detailed election results” of the presidential elections that led to the controversial re-election of President Nicolás Maduro for a third term, reported AFP.
“We call on the competent authorities to publish in full transparency the detailed election results and we ask the representatives of the electoral authorities to immediately share all the information with the opposition and independent observers,” said a joint statement of the G7 countries published by the Italian presidency of this group of the richest countries in the world.
The statement was signed by the first diplomats of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain and the United States, as well as by the European Union’s high representative for foreign policy.
“The reports of independent local and international observers express serious concern about the announced results of the presidential elections in Venezuela and the manner in which the electoral process was conducted, especially with regard to irregularities and a lack of transparency in the final counting of votes,” they emphasize. while stating that “it is of fundamental importance that the result reflects the will of the Venezuelan people”.
Sixty-one-year-old Maduro was declared re-elected for a third term, which runs until 2031, with 51.2 percent of the vote to 44.2 for his opponent, AFP noted.
