“Role and responsibility of armed forces on peacekeeping missions in the promotion and protection of human rights, the fight against gender-based violence and the promotion of international humanitarian law” is the theme of a information and awareness session organized by UN-Human Rights in Guinea 111 in partnership with the General Staff of the Guinean Armed Forces for the “Gangan 9” battalion at the training center for maintenance operations of Peace (CEOMP) from Samoreya to Kindia.

The launching ceremony of this activity took place this Tuesday, August 15, 2023 in the presence of regional authorities and representative of UN Human Rights in Guinea.

In his speech, Aime Kakolo NTUMBA, representative of the UN Human Rights office in Guinea, recalls that for several years, within the framework of UN peacekeeping operations, the daughters and sons of Guinea have been deploying, in a spirit of solidarity, to the aid of populations in distress, confronted with the horrors of armed conflicts and violations of human rights.

“UN Human Rights has set itself the goal of increasing the knowledge of the Gangan 9 contingent on human rights and international humanitarian law so that it can contribute to ensuring their promotion and protection during of his possible mission. Your service as future peacekeepers is a source of pride for all of us. And we have confidence in your ability to make a real difference in the lives of the people you will serve. This possible mission that awaits you is not only a task to accomplish, but an opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of those who live in regions torn by conflict and suffering. Our support, which falls within the overall framework of cooperation between the Republic of Guinea and the United Nations organization in the field of human rights, is testimony to the importance of your mission”, he said. for follow-up.

Further, the UN diplomat urges participants to have a brave heart, an open mind and unwavering compassion.

Speaking on behalf of the Governor of the Administrative Region of Kindia, Mamadou Lamarana Ditinn Barry, Director of Cabinet of the Governorate of Kindia affirms that it is a tradition at UN Human Rights to equip the battalions awaiting deployment in peacekeeping operations, on issues as important as the promotion and protection of human rights and international humanitarian law, without forgetting the fight against gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS.

“The mastery by the participants of the modules that will be given will help to materialize this desire for peace, but also and above all to strengthen the bonds of friendship and brotherhood that have always existed between the Guinean and Malian peoples. This is why I ask you to refrain from any act likely to undermine the dignity and physical and moral integrity, particularly women and children. Any discrepancy or failure in the mission of the blue helmets tarnishes not only Guinea but also and above all the organization of the United Nations as a whole. I am reassured in advance that, like the other Gangan battalions which have succeeded each other in Mali, the Gangan 9 battalion will also honor the Guinean armed forces, especially in this decisive phase in the life of West African nations where the African peoples rest their hope on their armed forces to strengthen their security situation,” he said.

This awareness session, which takes place from August 15 to 20, 2023, is designed to enable participants to become aware of their responsibilities on respect for human rights, the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and HIV, as well as the protection of civilians, as “Peacekeeping Soldiers”, any deviation or breach of which would taint the mission and more than certainly Guinea as a whole, but also incur their individual criminal or disciplinary responsibility under Guinean national legislation.
