German Virologist Professor Ralf Bartenschlager Honored for Translational Infection Research

Heidelberg University Hospital’s virologist Professor Ralf Bartenschlager has been presented with the prestigious prize for translational infection research by the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF). The award, which includes a cash prize of 5,000 euros, was presented during the DZIF annual meeting held in Hanover.

As a long-standing DZIF scientist, Bartenschlager has played a significant role in the field of molecular virology. He has been actively involved in the coordination committee of the DZIF research area “Hepatitis” and has conducted extensive research on the interaction between viruses and the host cells. Currently, his focus lies on RNA viruses such as hepatitis C viruses, flaviviruses (including dengue, Zika, and West Nile viruses), and coronaviruses.

One of Bartenschlager’s most groundbreaking contributions, according to DZIF, is the development of multiplication systems for hepatitis C viruses in cell cultures. Regarded as one of the most important discoveries in this area after the virus itself, these systems have formed the basis for the development and approval of the first hepatitis C drug in 2010. All drugs currently used in the treatment of hepatitis C were developed using the cell culture systems created in Bartenschlager’s laboratory.

“Ralf Bartenschlager and his team have made significant contributions to translational infection research in Germany and worldwide through their groundbreaking work. His findings and innovations have not only expanded our understanding of hepatitis C virus infections but have also played a crucial role in the development of new antiviral therapies,” commented Professor Dirk Busch, CEO of DZIF.

This recognition further solidifies Bartenschlager’s reputation as a leading figure in the field of virology, and his work continues to contribute to advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. With ongoing efforts to combat emerging viruses such as the coronavirus, Bartenschlager’s expertise and research will undoubtedly prove invaluable in the fight against future pandemics.

Overall, the prize serves as a testament to the importance of translational research in the field of infectious diseases and highlights the vital contributions made by scientists like Professor Ralf Bartenschlager in advancing our understanding and treatment of viral infections.]
