The ghostly meteorological phenomenon that was seen today in Barcelona

by time news

Some extensive Fog banks have submerged the Barcelona sea coast, leaving some spectacular images of its beaches. This phenomenon is known as maritime fog or advection fog.

These low clouds tend to be more common in other places in Catalonia, as is the case with fog of Lleida and the plain of Vic. But during today’s day they have starred in the coastal landscape of the Catalan capital.

“Fogs of maritime origin are the most frequent on our coast and They usually form in winter or early spring“explains Aemet. In addition, they usually appear in the first hours of daylight on days with low clouds over the sea.

But, What causes maritime fog?

This phenomenon is generated by the contrast in temperatures of the water (colder) and the air (warmer), which condenses to create a humid vapor that usually remains static over the sea, but when the east wind appears it ends up being pushed towards the coast to enter terrestrial soil.

Last year we saw this same phenomenon in early May. This 2024 has arrived somewhat earlier, but, unlike other meteorological events, within the period in which it is expected.
