Sharjah: Letters are an addiction for those who love reading and books. They rush after it, abandoning all other pleasures. Lovers of letters will never feel lonely in life. With them, the story and the characters will be comforting. The book of Abdul Kalam, a native of Alankod, working in the UAE who loves letters, is being released at the 41st International Book Fair to be held at the Sharjah Expo Center from November 2 to 13. Hear what he had to say about the book and his writing style:
I cannot forget the days when I grew up listening to the stories and birdsongs told by my mother in my youth. Since then, I had a great desire to listen and write stories. The library in my hometown gave it a boost. Since then, I have written a lot, but it has all been kept in a tin box. Time passed. Later some of it was sent to some magazines but I don’t know what happened to them afterwards. But when I saw and read the plot of some of the stories I wrote on behalf of others as stories and movies, I only understood that they thought the same way I was thinking. Today it can be called pure theft.
Meanwhile, I wrote a story to Sir for the Sahitya Samaj of Cochin Willington Island School. After reading it, Sir called me into the staff room and told me very secretly: “Did you write this on your own according to your own imagination? I can’t believe that a child of your age can write a story like this. If you steal a story and write it, it’s a big crime. That’s why.”
That sir’s words were the first award I got. Later, he wrote and kept a lot of stories, but all of them were lost. After becoming an expatriate, he became more interested in writing and reading. The most important thing is that I met a number of writers at the Sharjah International Book Fair and was able to join them in the UAE Writers Forum. Even today, the reason for going forward with writing is the inspiration of those moments. The culmination of all this is my first collection of short stories, “The Girl with the Golden Hair”. The book will be launched at the Sharjah International Book Fair in November. Published by Kunnamkulam Oxygen Books.
